Alfred (Buz) E. Brown, Ph.D.
joined BCMT 2003 as President in 2003. Buz has a proven track record in innovative business development, management and new venture creation. Dr. Brown's primary areas of scientific training and research interest are Tumor Biology, Stem Cell Biology, Differentiation, Oncology and Molecular Diagnostics.
Prior Experience Dr. Brown served most recently as the Director of the Office of Cooperative Research OCR (Medical Campus) at Yale University School of Medicine where he headed the technology commercialization group. At Yale, Dr. Brown developed a highly successful licensing effort and established an international reputation for starting venture backed life science companies, including Achillion Pharmaceuticals, Phytoceutica, Asilas Genomic Systems, RibX Pharmaceuticals, Aureon Biosystems, Vascular Insights and VaxInnate. Prior to joining the OCR at Yale in 1999, Dr. Brown worked in R&D at SmithKline & French Labs where he led several immunology and cancer drug development projects. In 1982, Buz became Director of Biotech Business Development, where he established and managed a number of significant collaborations & licenses with early biotech companies, including Biogen, Immunex and Genetics Institute. From 1988 to 1998, Dr. Brown was the founding CEO of a number of companies including Penn Technology Group, Knowledge Express Data System and Ontyx. Qualifications Buz has a Ph.D. in pharmacology and toxicology from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. Dr. Brown completed a post-doctoral fellowship in the Department of Pharmacology, Yale University School of Medicine. He received his B.A. from Colby College in Waterville, Maine Dr. Brown serves on the Board of Directors of Sapphire Therapeutics (observer), Oncovance, Molecular Logix, Spectral Genomics, Kardia Therapeutics and Progression. John S. Swartley, MBA, Ph.D.
joined BCMT as Senior Vice President in 2003. Dr. Swartley's research interests include anti-infective drug development, cancer therapeutics, molecular biology and immunology. He has a background in microbial pathogenesis and infectious disease research, and has extensive experience in the areas of biotechnology licensing and new business creation.
Prior Experience Prior to joining BCMT, Dr. Swartley served as Associate Director of the Office of Cooperative Research (Medical Campus) at Yale University. While at Yale, Dr. Swartley led numerous new venture formation and technology licensing activities. Prior to joining the OCR at Yale in 1997, John was a Research Associate in the Department of Infectious Diseases in the Department of medicine at Emory University where he studied bacterial diseases and molecular genetics. Dr. Swartley also served as a consultant to the Emory University Office of Technology Transfer where he provided business guidance on a variety of active licensing projects. Qualifications John holds a B.S. in Biology from Bates College, and a Ph.D. in Microbial & Molecular Genetics and an MBA degree from Emory University. He completed a Post Doctoral Fellowship in Molecular Biology and Microbial Pathogenesis at Emory University. Paul K. Tufano, CPA
joined BCM Technologies, Inc. ("BCMT") in 2004 as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Mr. Tufano provides over 26 years of financial and operational expertise in the areas of mergers, acquisitions, financial reporting, valuation analysis, transaction structuring, and integration of corporate operations.
Prior Experience Prior to joining BCMT, Mr. Tufano served as Executive Vice President of Operations and Chief Financial Officer of HealthHelp, Inc. a venture-backed radiology management firm providing clinical and utilization management expertise to national managed care organizations. While at HealthHelp, Mr. Tufano raised in excess of $20 million, restructured its operations to reach profitability and completed two mergers to improve shareholder value. Mr. Tufano also served as the CEO and CFO of Calumet Securities Corporation, an $800 million full service residential mortgage banking and insurance company where he developed three new revenue channels and redesigned operations to increase net worth by 246%. Mr. Tufano has also served as the Subsidiary Operations Manager for San Jacinto Savings a $3 Billion institution with over 168 subsidiary companies. While at San Jacinto, he developed and implemented the disposition of 116 subsidiaries, including stock and individual asset sales, representing over $840 million in asset value. Previously, Mr. Tufano was a manager with Arthur Young and Touche Ross & Co providing consulting and audit services to public and private growth-oriented businesses in the areas of due diligence, risk-return analysis, cash management strategies and audit services. Glenn A. Friedrich, Ph.D.
joined BCMT in 2005 as Senior Research Director. Dr. Friedrich has over a decade of experience in the creation and management of biotechnology companies and has worked with three BCMT portfolio companies. At BCMT, Dr. Friedrich is responsible for identifying promising technologies, evaluation investment opportunities and bringing management expertise to early ventures.
Prior Experience In 2000, Dr. Friedrich founded Ceros Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and served on its board and as CSO. Ceros concentrated on an important new pathway with several important drug targets for the treatment of osteoporosis. Prior to founding Ceros, Dr. Friedrich spent 5 years as a senior scientific manager at Lexicon Genetics Incorporated where he was the first senior scientist on staff and subsequently Group Leader of Biology. Dr. Friedrich has extensive experience in the use of animal models to validate drug targets and in the management and operations of biotechnology companies. Prior to entering the biotechnology industry, Dr. Friedrich was at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington. Qualifications Dr. Friedrich received his Ph.D. from Baylor College of Medicine and his B.S. from the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta.
Lisa A. Godfrey
joined BCM Technologies in November 2006 as Business Development Manager. Ms. Godfrey supports the marketing efforts for BCMT funds. Lisa also facilitates the development of business relationships for BCM Ventures.
Prior Experience Ms. Godfrey's experience includes over 15 years of administrative management experience. Ms. Godfrey previously worked at Forward Ventures, a San Diego-based venture capital firm. Her scope of knowledge spans from experience in biotechnology and medical device companies to investment, sales, and consulting firms. From 1992 to 1996, Ms. Godfrey served as Joint Service Administrator for the U.S. Department of Defense in the Air Intelligence Agency. Qualifications Ms. Godfrey is a graduate of the University of Phoenix where she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration and her Master Degree in Counseling.
Glenda S. Overbeck, MBA
joined BCM Technologies, Inc. ("BCMT") as the Director of Investment Activities in 2000 and became Vice President of Investment Activities in 2001. Ms. Overbeck has been in the venture capital business for twenty years.
Prior Experience Prior to BCM Technologies, Glenda was with Houston Partners, a Houston-based venture capital firm which specialized in information technology and life sciences. Glenda was the financial officer until 1994 at which time she became an Associate. She also served as President of HP-SBIP Management, Inc., the general partner of its affiliated Small Business Investment Company, from 1995-1999. Prior to Houston Partners, Glenda spent eight years as a Human Resources Director in the residential construction business in Houston. Qualifications Ms. Overbeck is a graduate of Pittsburg State University, where she received her BSED and MBA. Glenda passed Level II of the CFA Program in the year 1997. Glenda serves on the boards of Oncovance Technologies, Prokaryon Technologies, RosettaMed, SCA Therapeutics, Sennes Drug Innovations and WOW! Publications. She also serves as an officer in each of these companies as well as BBBC Investment Group, Kardia Therapeutics and Progression Therapeutics. She previously served as a director and officer of Opexa Pharmaceuticals until its acquisition by PharmaFrontiers (PFTR.OB) in 2004.
Erich R. Bell, MBA, CPA
joined BCM Technologies, Inc. ("BCMT") in 2006 as Manager, Financial Reporting. Erich brings 12 years of finance and accounting experience in the areas of management and financial reporting, financial accounting, strategic and financial planning, mergers and acquisitions, ERP systems, and international and domestic auditing. At BCMT, Erich is responsible for financial and accounting activities for BCMT and several of its portfolio companies.
Prior Experience Prior to BCMT, Erich was Senior Financial Analyst for CapRock Communications, a private-equity backed satellite-based telecommunications firm. While at CapRock, Erich was responsible for assisting in the design and implementation of strategic and financial plans and M&A activity that helped the company achieve double digit compound annual growth over the last few years. Previously, Erich coordinated a global SAP implementation project for Shell and managed financial and operational audits in more than 25 countries while working for BJ Services. Qualifications Erich has a MBA from Rice University and B.B.A. in Accounting from the University of Texas at Austin. He is a Certified Public Accountant in the state of Texas. Professional Affiliations Erich is a Board member of the Rice MBA Alumni Association and is 2005-2006 Chairman of its student-alumni committee. Erich is also a member of the AICPA and TSCPA.
Julia M. Wren
joined BCM Technologies, Inc. ("BCMT") as Associate in 2005 and became Director of Research in 2006. Her efforts focus on research to support investment and portfolio activities.
Prior Experience Prior to joining BCMT, Julia was founding CEO of a successful educational consulting firm. In three years, the company grew to six employees and served over forty clients. Qualifications Ms. Wren earned her BA at Rice University and worked as a lab technician on the Human Genome Project at Baylor College of Medicine. She plans to pursue an MBA.
Melissa S. Kramer
joined BCMT in September 2006 as an Executive Assistant to Dr. Brown.
Prior Experience Ms. Kramer brings over 12 years of administrative and managerial skills across various industries from biotechnology to legal. Prior to joining BCMT, Ms. Kramer worked as the executive assistant for the managing partner of Baker Botts L.L.P. Qualifications Ms. Kramer attended Houston Community College where she majored in journalism. Bonnie S. Brunson
joined BCMT in December 2001 as an Administrative Assistant. She is responsible for supporting the management and staff of BCMT.
Prior Experience Ms. Brunson's prior experience includes accounts payable in the oil & gas industry, as well as accounts receivable in the catering industry. She has also served in the administrative field for one of BCMT's past portfolio companies. Qualifications Bonnie has a certificate in accounting from The Bradford School of Business and plans to attend the University of Houston to pursue her degree in Accounting.
Philip E. Caldwell, Ph.D.
joined BCM Technologies ("BCMT") as Associate in 2007. His efforts focus on identifying promising technologies, evaluating investment opportunities and supporting portfolio companies. Dr. Caldwell's primary areas of scientific training and research interest are Endocrinology, Intracellular Signal Transduction and Oncology.
Prior Experience Prior to joining BCMT, Phil was an independent consultant based in Houston. He also performed internships at Isis Pharmaceuticals, an RNA based drug discovery and therapeutics company, and Orthovita, a biomaterials company that manufactures and develops bone substitutes for trauma, total joint implant, and fixation. Qualifications Dr. Caldwell earned both his B.A. and Ph.D. in Biochemistry & Cell Biology from Rice University.
Linda J. Paradiso, D.V.M., M.B.A.
is an Entrepreneur in Residence at BCMT. Dr. Paradiso has over 24 years of broad experience in large pharmaceutical and emerging biotechnology research and development. She has been involved in the development of new drug/biologic products in the areas of cancer, hematology, infectious disease, retinal diseases, pain, and respiratory/ pulmonary diseases. She has over 20 INDs to her credit and contributed directly to the worldwide development and approval and lifecycle management of marketed products Viracept®, Penetrex®, Omnicef®, Doxil®, DepoCyt®, Kepivance™, Neulasta™ and Aranesp®. Dr. Paradiso also is President and CEO of a pharmaceutical/biotechnology consulting service.
Prior Experience Dr. Paradiso previously served as vice president, clinical and regulatory affairs for Tanox, Inc. She was therapy area head for oncology regulatory affairs at Amgen, Inc., where she was responsible for global regulatory strategy for all pre-marketed and marketed oncology products, and head of oncology clinical development for the La Jolla global R&D laboratories of Pfizer. Before that, Linda was head of global clinical research for Agouron Pharmaceuticals (now Pfizer). She has served in clinical and regulatory senior management capacities for other emerging biotechnology companies. She began her career at Warner-Lambert (Parke-Davis) as a toxicologist, and spent 11 years in clinical and research positions of increasing responsibility. Dr. Paradiso is a member of the American Association for Cancer Research, American Society of Clinical Oncology, and American Society of Hematology. Qualifications Linda earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Michigan State University and a Master of Business Administration degree with emphasis on health care from the University of California-Irvine. She holds two B.S. degrees from University of Michigan, in Zoology and Natural Resources. Dr. Paradiso is a former officer of several publicly-traded biotechnology companies, including DepoTech (now SkyePharma), Salmedix (now Cephalon), and Tanox (now Genentech). |
